Curaçao is a beautiful and generally safe island to explore by car, but like any destination, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings, especially when it comes to parking and visiting less familiar areas.
Most popular beaches, restaurants, and tourist locations offer easy and free parking. However, when visiting the city or more remote areas, there are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure a safe and stress-free experience.

Parking in Curaçao

Beaches & Tourist Areas. At most beaches such as Jan Thiel, Mambo Beach, and Cas Abao, parking is usually free and located close to the entrance. These areas are generally safe during the day, especially when there are other visitors around.

Downtown Willemstad (Punda & Otrobanda). Parking in the city center is paid during the day (Monday–Saturday, approx. 08:00–18:00). Parking meters only accept local currency/coins.

Always check signage carefully. Incorrect parking can result in fines or even a wheel clamp.

Evenings & Sundays. Parking is usually free in most areas during evenings and Sundays, but always double-check local signs to be sure.

Safety Tips When Parking

Do not leave valuables in your car. Even in busy areas, never leave bags, phones, or electronics visible. This is one of the most common causes of break-ins.

Choose visible and well-lit areas. Especially in the evening, park where there is lighting, activity, or security nearby.

Lock your car properly. Always double-check that your car is locked before leaving.

Avoid isolated parking spots at night. Even if a place seems safe during the day, it may not be the same after dark.

Visiting Beaches & Remote Areas

Curaçao has many beautiful, more remote beaches and natural areas. While these are absolutely worth visiting, keep the following in mind:

Limited supervision. Some beaches, especially in the west (Westpunt area), have little to no supervision. Go during daylight hours and preferably not alone.

No valuables left behind. If you’re going swimming, take important items with you or leave them out of sight.

Check accessibility. Some roads leading to beaches or viewpoints can be rough. Avoid driving on roads that are clearly not suitable for your vehicle.

Areas & Situations to Be Careful With

We don’t want to discourage you, Curaçao is welcoming and friendly but it’s good to be aware:

Off-road driving. Avoid driving off-road unless you have a suitable vehicle. Many rental cars are not insured for off-road use, and damage may not be covered.

Residential neighborhoods at night. Some local neighborhoods are perfectly fine during the day but may feel unfamiliar or less comfortable at night if you don’t know the area. Stick to main roads and known locations.

Abandoned or very quiet locations. Avoid parking in completely isolated areas, especially after sunset.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Experience

  • Use Google Maps or navigation apps for reliable routes

  • Plan your trips during daylight if visiting new areas

  • Ask your rental provider for local tips (they often know the best and safest spots)

  • Keep emergency contacts saved in your phone

Conclusion

Exploring Curaçao by car is one of the best ways to experience the island. With a little awareness and common sense, you can safely enjoy everything from vibrant city life to hidden beaches.

Park smart, stay aware, and enjoy the freedom of discovering Curaçao at your own pace.
